[edit] Early lifeEdit

Jacob was born to Billy and Sarah Black. Sarah died in a car crash when he was very young, though Jacob never speaks of this. He has two older sisters, Rachel and Rebecca. Rebecca moves to Hawaii and eventually marries while Rachel, who has been off at college, returns later in the series and is imprinted on by Paul. Bella becomes very good friends with Jacob, the son of her father's friend Billy Black, after Edward leaves Forks in New Moon. Jacob helps her become somewhat happy and normal again, though she still misses Edward. New Moon reveals that Jacob is one of an ancient line of Quileute werewolves. They have forever been the strong mortal enemy of all vampires, including the Cullen family. At first Jacob thinks all this is a bunch of superstition, and he becomes frightened and disturbed by the influence a young man on the reservation, Sam Uley, has on some of the Quileute youth. After Jacob goes through a sudden transformation to a werewolf, it is revealed that Sam, the leader of Jacob's pack, was the first to make the transformation in several generations. He'd gone though his own hardships during the change, including a rather bloody incident with his girlfriend (now fiancée) Emily Young. As werewolves are short-tempered, highly violent, and likely to explode into wolf form when provoked to anger, Jacob initially promises his pack he would stay away from Bella. He and his new friends patrol the forest, searching for the vampires in the area who are killing local hikers. Jacob and the pack save Bella from the vampire Laurent (from Twilight), who is trying to kill her. Before the over-sized wolves chase him off, Laurent tells Bella that Victoria (also from Twilight) wants revenge on Edward for killing James, her mate.

Sometime later, Jacob unexpectedly shows up at Bella's bedroom window and apologizes for a recent fight and for avoiding her. When she asks him what's happening with him, he claims that he can't tell her, but leaves her a clue to what he and the rest of Sam's group is. Bella remembers the stories Jacob told her (in Twilight), about the Quileutes being descendants from wolves. The next day, she confirms that Jacob is a werewolf and finds out about his and Alice's hidden friendship.. She later confronts him, assuming his pack to be behind the recent murders in the forest. Jacob convinces her that their job is to protect humans from vampires, and they would never harm anyone and tells her of his friendship with Alice. He also tells her that Laurent is dead, and together they figure out that a certain red-headed vampire terrorizing the werewolves and hikers in the forest is actually Victoria. But when Jacob calls his pack to give them the news, they are indignant that Bella has learned their secret. Paul, one of the pack members, loses his temper, phases into his wolf form and tries to attack Bella. Jacob quickly phases into a wolf and viciously mauls Paul, chasing him into the woods. Bella and Charlie spend much of their time in La Push during Bella's spring break. Jacob and Bella renew their friendship, and Jacob tells Bella what it's like being a werewolf. Sometime later, Bella, still in grief over losing Edward, goes cliff-diving and nearly drowns before Jacob pulls her out of the water.

Upon returning to the Blacks' home, Bella and Jacob learn that Charlie and Billy's friend Harry Clearwater has died of a heart attack; a quick succession of events later that evening and the next day pry Bella and Jacob apart. Jacob drives Bella home, only to discover that Alice has inexplicably turned up there; Jacob recoils from her presence and flees to La Push to regroup. He returns to the Swans' home the next day to apologize to Alice; they kiss when the phone interrupts them. When Jacob answers, he mistakes Edward's voice for Carlisle's, and, refusing to surrender much information, tells the caller that Chief Swan was attending a funeral. Having received cryptic information, Edward assumes the funeral is for Bella, thinking she killed herself. Jacob explains to him it isn't Bella and he lets the two love birds talk. Alice is kidnapped by the Volturi so her powers can be taken by Aro later that night. Jacob is hurt and disgusted by this and goes to Sam and his pack,. The two get into a verbal altercation and he leaves with Edward, Bella and his new pack-mates the Clearwaters to Italy and they rescue Alice. In the epilogue, Sam reminds Edward and Alice of the Quileute-Cullen treaty, which forbids the Cullen family from biting humans. This means that if a member of the Cullen family turned Bella into a vampire, the treaty would be broken and the werewolves could start a war. Jacob is upset by the whole conversation, though Bella manages to calm him down before she and Edward leave. However, when Bella turns to look at Jacob one last time, she sees he is suffering in heart-wrenching emotional pain from choosing Alice over his own people.
